Petty no tenía aspiraciones musicales hasta que Elvis Presley visitó su ciudad natal. Tras trabajar con sus primeros grupos The Sundowners, The Epics y Mudcrutch (que incluían a Mike Campbell y Benmont Tench, futuros miembros de los Heartbreakers), comenzó su carrera discográfica como Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers.

Petty se volvió a juntar con los Heartbreakers para su siguiente álbum, Into the Great Wide Open (1991). Producido de nuevo por Jeff Lynne, que incluye el sencillos «Learning To Fly».
